Holocene climate variability in arid Asia: Nature and mechanisms

چکیده

The papers in this special issue are derived from a selection of presentations given at the RACHAD workshop titled ‘‘Pattern of Holocene Climate Change in Central Asia: Data Synthesis’’ held at Lanzhou University, People’s Republic of China, from 25th to 27th July 2006. RACHAD is INQUA Palaeoclimate Commission (PALCOMM) Project (#0502), concerned with ‘rapid climate change in Central Asia’s drylands’, and the 2006 workshop was its fourth gathering. The RACHAD project was established in 2000 and has been led by Prof Fahu Chen from Lanzhou University. RACHAD’s initial objectives were to stimulate the reconstruction of Holocene climatic and environmental changes in arid Central Asia at high resolution, to intensify international research collaboration, and to develop and refine techniques for environmental reconstruction and dating. r 2008 Elsevier Ltd and INQUA. An Abrupt Centennial-Scale Drought Event and Mid-Holocene Climate Change Patterns in Monsoon Marginal Zones of East Asia

The mid-latitudes of East Asia are characterized by the interaction between the Asian summer monsoon and the westerly winds. Understanding long-term climate change in the marginal regions of the Asian monsoon is critical for understanding the millennial-scale interactions between the Asian monsoon and the westerly winds. Abrupt climate events are always associated with changes in large-scale ci...

Holocene moisture evolution in arid central Asia and its out-of-phase relationship with Asian monsoon history

We synthesize palaeoclimate records from the mid-latitude arid Asian region dominated today by the Westerlies (‘‘arid central Asia’’ (ACA)) to evaluate spatial and temporal patterns of moisture changes during the Holocene. Sediment records from 11 lakes with reliable chronologies and robust proxies were selected to reconstruct moisture histories based on a five-class ordinal wetness index with ...

Insolation driven biomagnetic response to the Holocene Warm Period in semi-arid East Asia

The Holocene Warm Period (HWP) provides valuable insights into the climate system and biotic responses to environmental variability and thus serves as an excellent analogue for future global climate changes. Here we document, for the first time, that warm and wet HWP conditions were highly favourable for magnetofossil proliferation in the semi-arid Asian interior. The pronounced increase of mag...

Climate variations of Central Asia on orbital to millennial timescales

The extent to which climate variability in Central Asia is causally linked to large-scale changes in the Asian monsoon on varying timescales remains a longstanding question. Here we present precisely dated high-resolution speleothem oxygen-carbon isotope and trace element records of Central Asia's hydroclimate variability from Tonnel'naya cave, Uzbekistan, and Kesang cave, western China. On orb...

The influence of temperature, moisture, and eolian activity on Holocene lake development in West Greenland

Holocene paleolimnological records (diatoms, organic content, spectrally inferred sediment chlorophyll-a) from three West Greenland lakes (~67°N) situated along a transect from the outer coast to a nunatak at the periphery of the Greenland Ice Sheet are used to explore the nature of regional postglacial lake development and its relationship to Holocene climate evolution. The lakes were deglacia...
